Walk into Chain Reaction Bicycles in Los Altos, and it becomes obvious that Trek bicycles are built for speed.

Along the back wall are mountain bikes, and along the left wall are the road bikes. Parked up front are the track bikes awaiting new owners like puppies in a pet store window. But which to pick? How do you make your selection?

The Chain Reaction Bicycles store in Los Altos has a great selection of road, track and mountain bikes, along with a complete service and parts department, a fitting station, and accessories such as shoes, helmets, and cycling gear. I like that the shop is right off of Foothill Boulevard and the 280. The best, however, is the sales staff, who are knowledgeable and friendly. This makes walking into the shop more like visiting friends and seeing what's new and maybe better than what I already have.

I stopped in at Cognition Cyclery in Mountain View this past week to look at their cool bikes and see what's new.

I asked the staff what makes this shop different from others and Vanessa Seelaus, Store Manager since August, piped up, "This store has me!"

I've been over to Cognition Cyclery a few times. The first time was to ask if they knew of anyone who designed bike frames. They could have said that wasn't their thing and sent me looking elsewhere. That's not how they took it, though. A few moments later I had a list of three people and how to reach them.

When you walk into Cognition Cyclery, the apparel and sales desk are to the right, along with the hydration and nutrition center. At the back and to the right are the shoes and helmets, divided equally between women's and men's gear, along with eyewear and apparel accessories.

If you happen to visit Lumsden, Saskatchewan, in Canada, a town of 1600, you will able to meet the designers and fabricators over at Firebikes. They build custom bikes. They build them locally.
