Freedom to Learn

This is the front entrance to the J. Henry Meyer Memorial Library on the Stanford University campus. It is one of about twenty on the campus, giving undergraduates a place to study, use computers, make use of digital technology labs, and find access to the East Asia Library. But more impressive is in how many minds have been fed over the years by those who have chosen to study there.

Spiritual Freedom

If you visit the Memorial Church on the Stanford University campus, most likely you'll go inside, and when you emerge again outside, you'll continue your tour without ever walking around the outside of the church. However, I encourage you to walk past the bicycle racks and glance up at the curved stone architecture, and let your eyes rest on the stained glass windows as they appear from the outside looking in.

Freedom to Express Love

Walking along a road near Memorial Church on the Stanford University campus, you may come upon this love letter written in chalk on a parking space retainer wall. What I really like about the letter is that it's a collage of flowers, made with colored chalk. Someone took the time to create artwork and use it as a letter of love, goodwill, charity, kindness.

Flag of Freedom

One of my favorite things to photograph is a flag on a flagpole. Where I live, I often see the American flag flying high up in the sky, a symbol of American freedom. Of course, freedom must often be fought for, with conviction and dedication, and often by soldiers who learn how to fight for justice and a way of life for themselves and for those 'back home' who are not soldiers.

Recent Medical Advice

I went in for my annual physical checkup last week. My blood work results showed that I needed to adjust my cholesterol levels. I kind of knew that since I'd taken myself off of Vytorin about 8 months ago. My doctor said that was probably a good idea, since recent tests had shown that while Vytorin seemed to lower bad cholesterol, it didn't seem to increase good cholesterol. I am now taking just Simvastatin. Okay, that's the normal stuff to talk about at a doctor's visit.

Invest in Expertise

It seems appropriate to talk about investing in expertise (note that this doesn't say 'experts') in light of our nation's political leaders trying to come to terms with their own spending (and taxing) policies.

The debate in Washington will continue in the months ahead, mostly as a discussion about expectations. That is part of their job description and decisions will be made based on how well they express and defend their ideas and convictions about how to spend money.

Stop and Take a Look Around

In my last Editorial, I made the comment that we should 'kick the can' regarding the debt ceiling. This is not an endorsement of the Republican plan nor of the Democratic plan. It's just that we should acknowledge we are at a crossroads where all parties should stop, like at an All Way Stop intersection.

If each party feels like it must strong arm peers and opponents alike, then we've lost what it means to be America. Maybe we are finding out what it means to be America in a global economy. Bottom line, though, is that debt must be paid.
